Beaver County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Should I feed a baby wild animal I found?
It is not uncommon to hear that a baby wild animal was found. Your instincts may kick in and your first response may be to rescue it and provide it some food. However, feeding an orphaned wild animal may cause more problems than you would think. This step can be very lethal and result in deadly consequences. You may have heard lots of people telling stories about how they rescued and later fed an infant but in actuality, the survival chances are very slim and they just got lucky. But this is not a time to test your chances but instead to do the right thing by considering all possible consequences.

Do not feed a baby wild animal
Feeding a baby wild animal can negatively impact its health. If you give it solid food, it will undergo additional stress and shock. This will disable it from drinking or eating anything. Or sometimes the food that you are giving it is not suitable for that wild animal and it could get sick and suffer even more. The formula for pets found in stores is not nutritional as every animal is different and what may work for one may not work for the other. In some cases, it works for a while but then it all comes crashing down and in such a situation even if wildlife rehabilitators are called after feeding the animal, there is very little that can be done to reverse the damage. It is very difficult to stop oneself from touching or reaching out to a wild baby animal. It is so adorable and all you want to do is hold it in your arms. However, such a thing is extremely dangerous and should be avoided under all circumstances. We have valid reasons to justify this statement.

Carriers of dangerous diseases
Baby wild animals carry a lot of dangerous diseases. They are wild after all and are carriers of various parasites and viruses that can be easily transferred to you if you are not careful. Diseases like Giardia can be contracted even through the tiniest of wild animals and then you’ll be left suffering with its symptoms and aftercare only because you found it cute and adorable.

They can attack you
Baby wild animals should be kept at a distance because they can bite and attack you if you approach them with good intentions. They will see your approach as a threat to their life and will not only retreat but also attack in self-defense. Some bites and scratches can cut way too deep, hence, it is just best to stay away and avoid all contact

Do not take them home
Some people are also in favor of raising the wild animal they find. If you have any instinct telling you to take the baby wild animal, stop yourself then and there. You may want to raise the wild animal thinking of an additional family member; however, it is to be noted that such actions can have dire consequences. Taking in a wild animal, feeding it, and keeping it with you is not legal at all. No matter how much you try to hide it, it will be revealed one day and, on that day, you can be heavily fined. The baby wild animal that you rescued and brought up so lovingly may be euthanized in extreme cases and then you will feel like all your hard work and love went to waste. Thus, it is advised to step back from all wild baby animals and do not keep any contact with them as it can result in bad results for both you and the animal.
